VAGINAL MICROBIOME TESTING

RESTORE BALANCE, COMFORT AND CONFIDENCE

Greta Faulkner Naturopath

Your vaginal microbiome is a community of microorganisms that plays an important role in maintaining vaginal health. In many reproductive-aged women, beneficial Lactobacillus species help maintain an acidic vaginal environment, providing protection against the overgrowth of certain microorganisms.

When this environment becomes disrupted, it may be associated with conditions such as bacterial vaginosis (BV), recurrent vaginal infections, irritation, unusual discharge, infertility and persistent vaginal discomfort.

A Vaginal Microbiome Test is an at-home vaginal swab that provides information about the bacteria and other microorganisms present within your vaginal environment. Depending on the testing panel, it may help identify microbial patterns associated with BV and other vaginal microbiome changes.

Results are interpreted alongside your symptoms, medical history and relevant investigations to help guide personalised recommendations, rather than relying on microbiome findings alone.

What Does Vaginal Microbiome Testing Assess?

A comprehensive vaginal microbiome test provides information about the

microorganisms present within your vaginal environment.

Depending on the testing panel, this may include:

  • Protective Lactobacillus species: Identification and relative abundance of

  • Lactobacillus bacteria, which help maintain a healthy vaginal environment.

  • Bacteria associated with bacterial vaginosis (BV): Detection of microbial patterns

  • associated with BV, including organisms such as Gardnerella.

  • Candida species: Identification of selected yeasts associated with vulvovaginal

  • candidiasis (thrush), where included in the panel.

  • Vaginal microbiome diversity: Assessment of the composition and diversity of

  • vaginal bacteria, including patterns of vaginal dysbiosis.

  • Vaginal pH levels

  • Some infections relating to sexually transmitted infections (STIs).

  • Other selected microorganisms: Depending on the test, additional organisms

  • associated with vaginal or reproductive tract infections may be assessed.

Results are interpreted alongside your symptoms, medical history and other relevant

investigations to help determine their clinical significance.

Who Is This Test For?

You may benefit from vaginal microbiome testing if you experience:

  • Recurrent thrush or yeast infections

  • Bacterial vaginosis (BV)

  • Unexplained vaginal odour, irritation, or discharge

  • Pain or discomfort during intercourse

  • Persistent itching or burning

  • Fertility or IVF preparation

  • Post-antibiotic recovery or hormonal changes (e.g., postpartum, menopause)

How It Works:

The process is simple and can be completed from the comfort and privacy of your own home.

1. Book Your Initial Consultation

We'll discuss your symptoms, medical history, previous treatments and any relevant investigations to determine whether vaginal microbiome testing is appropriate for you.

2. Receive Your Test Kit

If testing is recommended, your test kit will be ordered and delivered directly to your home, with instructions for collecting your sample.

3. Collect & Return Your Sample

Collect your vaginal swab following the instructions provided and return it to the laboratory using the supplied packaging and shipping instructions.

4. Review Your Results

Once your results are available, we'll review the findings together, discussing what they may mean in relation to your symptoms and vaginal health.

5. Develop Your Personalised Plan

Based on your symptoms, medical history and relevant test findings, we'll develop an individualised plan that may include vaginal health education, lifestyle recommendations and targeted treatment or referral where appropriate.

Testing is an additional cost and is recommended only where clinically appropriate.
